Miramichi Transit Offers Free Rides June 5th
Miramichi Transit will be offering free rides on Wednesday, June 5th for World Environment Day
MIRAMICHI- Free bus rides will be offered all day on Miramichi Transit buses on June 5 to help recognize an important world-wide environmental initiative.
World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5 of each year to encourage awareness and action for the protection of the environment. Supported by the United Nations, more than 143 countries participate in the annual event and the theme for 2019 is ‘Air Pollution’.
“We want to encourage the use of public transportation because it is a viable way to reduce emissions and lessen a person’s carbon footprint,” said James Mallory, manager of Miramichi Transit. “In conjunction with World Environment Day, we felt this was a great opportunity to raise community awareness on our transit system and help residents understand just how beneficial transit can be for an individual and the environment they live in.”
According to www.worldenvironmentday.global, reducing vehicle emissions is an important intervention to improve air quality. Mallory says Miramichi Transit addresses this need, while providing riders with a safe, efficient and low-cost option to get where they need to go.
“Since 2009, Miramichi Transit has provided an alternative transportation option to residents which is safer for the environment and is easier on the user’s wallet,” he said. “Our ridership continues to improve through various initiatives and we hope on June 5 to see new passengers who can ride the bus for free and experience what Miramichi Transit has to offer.”
Miramichi Transit operates three separate bus lines throughout the entire city from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Annual ridership is roughly 50,000.
