HURRICANE IRMA

Power crews from New Brunswick and the other Atlantic provinces are headed
south to help retore electricityonce Hurricane Irma dies down.

The monster storm zeroed in on the Tampa Bay region overnight, with Georgia,
Alabama and Tennessee also bracing for some impact.

Now a Category 1 storm, the U-S National Hurricane Center says further
weakening is possible, and will likely become a tropical storm when it
crosses into Georgia.

MIRAMICHI POLICE FORCE REPORT

A 37 year old man is facing charges after a domestic dispute call early
Saturday.

Police arrested a suspect who is now facing charges of assault and breaching
a court order.

Literacy Investment

The Gallant Government is investing $2.25 million dollars to support literacy
among Grade 2 students.

The funding will be given out over a five-year period to assist Elementary
Literacy Incorporated, which offers volunteer-based reading programs in both
anglophone and francophone schools. Premier Brian Gallant says improving
literacy rates is one of the best ways to tackle poverty in the province.

Gulf speeding fine

A cruise ship owner has been fined for breaching the 20-kilometre-per-hour
speed limit in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

The Seven Seas Navigator, operated by Regent Cruises, was given a $6,000
tiket and ordered to pay within 30 days or ask for a federal review of the
case.

Lower speed limits were imposed in some areas of the gulf because of the
deaths of 13 Right Whales earliuer this summer, some of whcih died after ship
strikes.

And another dead whale has washed ashore on PEI…but it’s not believed to be
one iof the endangered Right Whales.

The senior baseball semi-final between Moncton and Chatham is tied at a game
apiece after an 8-4 win b y the Fisher Cats over the Ironmen.  Game #3 goes tonight
at 7:30 at Ironmen Field

(Miramichi Cardinals Press Release)
This weekend, the Miramichi Cardinals were defeated in game 1 of the tournament, 6-5 to the Dieppe Cardinals. Mike Simmons was the relief pitcher for Dennis Graham. Dustin McKay was MVP for that game.
The Miramichi Cardinals defeated the Fredericton Blue Jays in game 2. Dustin McKay was the winning pitcher and MVP for that game.
The Miramichi Cardinals were defeated 10-0 by the Fredericton Expos. Chris McKay was the pitcher. AJ McKay was voted MVP for that game. The Miramichi Cardinals finished as the league champions!!

The Blue Jays wrapped up a weekend series against Detroit with an 8-2 win.
The Rays downed the red Sox 4-1. The Yankees pummelled the Rangers 16-7.

Rafael Nadal won the U-S Open…his 16th grand slam tennis title.
