An inquest is to begin a week from today in the death of a 58-year-old heavy
equipment operator killed in a workplace accident at a gravel pit in

The coroner’s jury in Woodstock will have the opportunity to make
recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.

James Baker was killed on October 27th, 2014.

Baker died when the equipment he was in rolled over and he was trapped under
the water at the bottom of a gravel pit.


Miramichi Police handed out 18 tickets to local bars for Liquor Control Act
violations last week. Police say the visiting drinking establishments in the
are last week and issued the tickets for allowing minors inside, under-age
drinking, overly intoxicated patrons and ilegal possession of liquor.

Snowmobile Fatality


A 47-year-old Ontario woman was killed in a snowmobile crash in the
Nepisiguit Falls area.

Bathurst RCMP responded to the crash saturday afternoon about 25 kilometres
from chemin Lodge. A woman driving the snowmobile was attempting to go up a
hill, lost control, fell and hit a tree. She died at the scene. The woman was
travelling with a group of snowmobilers at the time of crash.

Alcohol is not considered to be a factor in the crash. The investigation is

New Police Cars

City council has approved the purchase of three new police cruisers and two
sppecial service trucks. Even though they are coming in well under the amount
budgeted, a couple of councillors had concerns about the tendering process.

The city received only one bid on the tender call…and it didn’t meet
specifications. Staff then went to dealerships to find a deal on the
specialized vehicles and in the end decided to buy the cruisers from
Miramichi Chrysler Dodge Jeep for almost $171,000. That is well under the
$216,000 that was budgeted.



Brad Gushue won a second straight Briar beating Alberta’s Brendan Bottcher
6-4 in the final.

In the NHL…Coyotes blanked the Canucks 1-0. Flames lost 5-2 to the
Islanders. Black Hawks beat the Bruins 3-1.

The Raptors won their eighth in a row handling the Knicks 132-106.
